Community Reading Club
The Community Reading Club was started in 2017 and includes about 50 children and 15 women who learn reading, counting, and writing. Activities include personal development (5D Cycle of Self-Discovery), crafts, games, sports, storytelling, community service, counseling, and guidance. It provides children an opportunity to interact and learn from each other.
The club focuses on promoting learning and listening skills, enhancing children’s talents through sports, music, dance, drama, art, and crafts. LCU identified that many children in local communities struggled with English, Uganda's official language. The club supplements school work with extra reading, writing, and counting support.

Since 2017, volunteers from the Wangari Women Project have supported the children every Saturday. Volunteers like Harriet Nalwonga (2017) and Nabukalu Joyce (2018–2021) along with Michael Nkalubo and Mackline Nattembo have contributed their time.
Children receive counseling and advice on safety and school attendance. Since 2018, the club members’ class performance has improved, with boosted confidence in English. The club has welcomed children who were not attending school, enhancing listening, concentration, and self-expression through storytelling.
Practical skills taught include personal development, hygiene, financial management, and dental care, with about 500 children provided with toothpaste and toothbrushes during Christmas celebrations.
The club currently lacks furniture, sports equipment, qualified teachers, and teaching materials to maximize benefits for members.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the club became crucial, keeping children active with sports, reading, and psychological support until schools reopened in 2022.
