Smile of Child Program

The Smile of Child project is a unique program focused on helping needy children and their families, especially single mothers and orphans in areas of LCU’s operation, with basic needs such as education materials, mattresses, food, clothing, and other essentials. This is made possible through support from our partners and friends worldwide, including Uganda, Australia, and Scotland.

Over the years, the project has impacted over 300 mothers and more than 200 children through generous donations from friends like Linda Mitchell from Scotland and Stephanie and Jason Brenker of Australia. Their support has brought countless smiles to the faces of children and mothers alike. Items distributed include lingerie, books, pens, mathematical sets, colors, toys, baby blankets, diapers, and clothes, some of which are hand sewn.

Donated items are typically distributed during celebrations of international days such as Christmas, Easter, Women’s Day, Good Deeds Day, African Child Day, and Youth Day.

These celebrations encourage bonding and sharing through peer learning. Children and women showcase their talents by singing, dancing, reciting poems, and acting in plays that promote community problem solving.

On 1st September 2018, 27 mattresses were donated to LCU through our friend Linda Mitchell by Rosemary from Scotland on her birthday. This donation came after LCU identified poor nutrition and inadequate bedding as factors affecting children's performance.

On 9th October 2017, during Uganda’s 55th independence anniversary, each sponsored child received a pair of shoes. This was made possible through funds raised at a HUGGS (Helping Ugandan Girls Get Stronger) concert organized in Scotland by Linda Mitchell and Jean Inness (RIP), featuring Bruce Davies and the Markinch Community Choir.
