Wangari Women Revolving Microfinance Scheme

The Wangari Women Revolving Microfinance Scheme is a community empowerment initiative established to support vulnerable and low-income women in Wakiso, Kampala, and Luweero districts through accessible financial support, entrepreneurship development, and household economic strengthening.

The scheme is designed to provide small revolving loans, savings opportunities, and financial literacy support to women, enabling them to start or expand income-generating activities and improve the wellbeing of their families.

Inspired by the values of resilience, dignity, and women-led transformation, the scheme focuses on empowering women to become financially independent while building sustainable livelihoods within their communities. Through a revolving model, beneficiaries who receive support are encouraged to repay gradually, allowing other women within the network to benefit from the same opportunity.

The initiative prioritizes women involved in small-scale businesses, agriculture, animal rearing, market vending, tailoring, crafts, food production, and other local enterprises. In addition to financial support, the program promotes mentorship, accountability, peer support, and responsible financial management.

The scheme works in groups which are managed and supervised by the Federation Committees, who form part of the LCU community structure. These committees play a key role in beneficiary identification, loan monitoring, accountability, mentorship, community mobilization, and ensuring that the revolving fund operates transparently and sustainably within the communities served by LCU.

Objectives of the Scheme

  • Promote economic empowerment among vulnerable women.
  • Increase access to affordable microfinance services.
  • Support women-led small businesses and income-generating activities.
  • Encourage a culture of saving, financial discipline, and entrepreneurship.
  • Strengthen household stability and community resilience.
  • Create a sustainable revolving fund that continuously benefits more women.

How the Scheme Works

Women are organized into community support groups where they receive financial literacy training and access to small revolving loans. Beneficiaries are supported to invest in viable economic activities and repay the funds in manageable instalments.

Repaid funds are then revolved to support additional women within the community. The Federation Committees oversee implementation at community level by coordinating beneficiaries, monitoring repayments, resolving challenges, encouraging accountability, and ensuring that the support reaches the intended women effectively and fairly.

Areas of Support

  • Small business financing
  • Agriculture and crop farming
  • Revolving animal rearing projects
  • Skills development and vocational support
  • Savings and financial literacy training
  • Women’s group capacity building
